Neil is Managing Director at DCE, and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the company including project/staff management, quality control, client liaison and generating new business. He is also an active ecologist at the practice and continues to undertake a range of surveys and ecological assessments.
He holds a PhD in invertebrate/plant chemical ecology and physiology, as well as an MSc in Environmental Biology and a 1st Class BSc degree in Zoology from Swansea University; he was awarded the E. W. Knight-Jones Prize in Zoology from the institution. Since attaining his academic qualifications, Neil has worked at DCE for 5 years, and has also worked as a Tutor at Swansea University, as an entomological researcher, and as an ecological consultant for another firm.
Neil has a wide-range of knowledge and experience of wildlife legislation and surveying for a variety of taxa, including protected species (especially bats and great crested newt), vascular plants and terrestrial invertebrates. He has undertaken a large number of Extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys/Preliminary Ecological Appraisals as well as providing input for several Environmental Statements for a range of developments.
He is a licensed bat, great crested newt and barn owl surveyor in Wales and a full Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). He is also a qualified tree-climber with a Level 2 City and Guilds Award in Tree-Climbing and Aerial Rescue. He is the Chair of the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Bat Group and sits on the committee of the Welsh Geographic Section of CIEEM.
